I have managed to track down Fieldings original dissertation which introduced REST. I found the link in the document A RESTful Approach which I downloaded from the IEEE site. However the link didn't work properly in Adobe Acrobat Reader and only took me to the top of the University of Califonia website. As usual Google helped out and took me here http://www.ics.uci.edu/~fielding/pubs/dissertation/top.htm . This looks to be an extremely weighty document and will be a lot of heavy reading. I will attempt this in part, but will most likely look to some of the shorter and more condensed documents I have found.
No sooner said than found. A second document (REST eye for the SOA guy) I was looking at has lead me here http://rest.blueoxen.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl which is a wiki on how REST has developed and how to implement it.
